What is a Electromagnetic clutch?
The electromagnetic clutch is one of the most powerful components that are used in an automatic transmission. It is a combination of two different parts which makes it possible to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and then converts the electrical energy back into mechanical energy.

Advantages of Electromagnetic clutch:
- A large amount of torque can be transferred from engine to transmission without the use of any clutch plates or friction plates. This reduces wear and tear on the transmission and also reduces noise, vibration, and harshness associated with clutches.
- The advantages of an electromagnetic clutch are that it is very light in weight and can be manufactured with high precision.
Disadvantages of Electromagnetic clutch:
- Electromagnetic clutches have high manufacturing costs because they require sophisticated technology for manufacturing them as compared to other types of clutches such as hydraulic ones.
- Electromagnetic clutch requires precise timing for optimal performance as compared to other types such as those using hydraulics or bands that don’t require any precise timing at all. Electromagnetic clutches cannot be used in manual transmissions due to their inability to transfer power via gears alone unlike those using hydraulics or bands that can transfer power through gears too.
- The load pressure is extremely high so the parts have to be made of a special alloy.
