Difference Between Current and Static Electricity

Difference Between Current and Static Electricity

What is Current?

  • Current
is the type of electricity that carries a charge and can flow in one
direction through a conductor. This allows current to move through
wires, conductors, etc. It also makes the current move more quickly than
    static electricity.
  • Current is the flow of electrons in a
circuit. The current in a circuit is measured in amperes (A). Current
can be either direct or alternating depending on the direction of flow
of current. Direct current is known as DC and occurs when electrons flow
from the negative to the positive terminal, while alternating current
(AC) has two-phase flows of electrons between two terminals.
  • The
flow of current in a wire is described by Ohm’s Law: V = IR where I =
current flowing per unit length (amperes), R = resistance (ohms), and V =
    voltage (volts).

What is Static Electricity?

  • Static electricity or electrostatic discharge (ESD) occurs when charged particles are separated by distance but remain attached to each other. It is caused by the movement of charged particles called ions from one object to another through the air or other conducting mediums.
  • Static electricity is the type of electricity that we do not require specific metals or objects, either it is a conductor or an insulator. It does not carry any current and has no direction of flow, which makes it similar to static friction.

Difference between Static electricity and Current:

  • Static electricity can develop irrespective of metals or objects, but the current is produced only in conductors.
  •  Static charges do not usually cause any harm, but the current is very dangerous.
  • The existing time period of Static electricity is very less compared to the current.
  • Static electricity is measured with a gold-leaf electroscope and Current is measured with digital meters and analog.
  • Static electricity can also be used to create a spark between materials, such as when you rub your hands together or touch an insulator and metal conductor.
  • Current is used to run electronic items.
